THE BUREAU OF PROLEFEED
Last updated: March 28, 2026
Prolefeed is a Chrome extension that satirically rewrites news headlines. This policy explains what data we collect, why, and how it's handled.
What We Collect
Anonymous Usage Analytics
When you activate the extension, we send a single anonymous event to our server containing:
- The news site domain (e.g., nytimes.com) — never the full URL, article title, or page content
- A hashed device fingerprint — a one-way SHA-256 hash derived from generic browser properties (user agent, language, timezone). We cannot reverse this hash to identify you
- Aggregate counts — number of headlines processed and skipped per activation
- Mode — whether you used the free tier or your own API key (we do not record which provider or key)
- Error codes — if something fails, we record the error type (not error details)
This data is stored on Cloudflare's infrastructure and automatically deleted after 90 days.
Free Tier Rate Limiting
To enforce the 5-use free tier limit, we store a usage counter associated with your hashed fingerprint in Cloudflare KV. This counter expires after 90 days.
What We Do NOT Collect
- Browsing history or reading patterns
- Full URLs or article content
- Personally identifiable information (name, email, IP address stored long-term)
- Your API keys (stored only in your browser's local storage, never transmitted to us)
- Which API provider you use for BYOK mode
- Cookies or localStorage for tracking purposes
Third-Party Services
Free Tier Users
Your headlines are sent through our Cloudflare Worker to OpenRouter.ai for AI processing. OpenRouter's privacy policy applies to their handling of this data. Headlines are not stored by our Worker after processing.
BYOK (Bring Your Own Key) Users
Your headlines are sent directly from your browser to your chosen API provider (OpenRouter, Anthropic, or OpenAI). We never see your headlines or API key in BYOK mode.
Data Storage
- Analytics data: Cloudflare D1 (SQLite), auto-deleted after 90 days
- Rate limit counters: Cloudflare KV, 90-day TTL
- Your settings and API keys: Chrome's local storage on your device only
Your Rights
- You can clear all local extension data by uninstalling the extension or clearing Chrome's extension storage
- Analytics data is anonymous and cannot be linked back to you
- The extension works identically whether or not analytics pings succeed (they are fire-and-forget)
